Manufacturing in Your State

An innovative and growing manufacturing sector is vital to America’s economic and national security, as well as to providing good jobs for future generations. Manufacturing is present in every state across the nation, including the District of Columbia, and contributes about 12 percent to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The data presented in the national maps show that U.S. manufacturing has been hit particularly hard during the recent recession. The maps also demonstrate this manufacturing decline is not entirely caused by the current economic downturn. U.S. manufacturing has been in a recession for the last decade, losing millions of jobs between the years of 2000 and 2009.
